Benefits

PROVIDE OPTIMAL IRRIGATION AND WATER EFFICIENCY

For optimal absorption, tree roots must receive water slowly. TreePans are designed to funnel all water, natural and irrigation, directly to the drip line of the tree where it naturally permeates a series of openings. Our unique edging retains the water, reducing waste and limiting storm water runoff. Following capture and percolation, TreePans innovative design creates a dome above the soil, reducing evaporation and preserving moisture for longer than mulch or plastic sheeting.

Protect from mechanical damage

One of the leading reasons why only 50% of trees planted on public property survive past two years is maintenance-related mechanical damage. TreePans are designed with tough, beveled outer walls that allow mowers and weed eaters to trim grass without harming the bark of young trees. In addition to improved tree survival, landscaping and property management departments report substantial time and labor savings as TreePans reduce the precision required to mow around trees.

Alternative to mulch

Industry standards state that mulch should be placed around young trees to prevent weeds and grass from competing with the tree for moisture.  In practice, however, weeds and grass frequently penetrate mulch, particularly where mulch is not regularly replaced and maintained. Furthermore, recent studies indicate that moisture becomes trapped in the mulch and does not flow down to the tree’s root system.  Our studies show that not only do TreePans virtually eliminate the growth of water-hungry weeds and grass, the TreePans design funnels over 50% more water to the root system than traditional mulching.

Replace Plastic Sheeting

One common response to weed and grass persistence is to lay plastic sheeting around the base, whether alone or in conjunction with mulch. While plastic may keep the moisture in and prevent weeds, it also prevents water from reaching the soil. During heavy rain or irrigation events, excess water may pool on top of sheeting or run off and away from the tree. Studies show that root systems thrive in a moist soil with adequate ventilation. TreePans innovative dome design creates a greenhouse effect that helps retain moisture while funneling maximum available moisture to the roots.

Prevent mold and fungus

The use of wood mulch and wood chips is associated with increases in mold, fungus, and insect populations. In addition, recent studies show decaying mulch can form a water barrier, effectively preventing roots from receiving vital nutrients while fostering conditions for fungal growth. Our picture illustrates mulch breakdown after just 30 days. TreePans are made with durable environmentally-friendly recyclable plastic that will not promote mold and fungus.

Replace herbicides and pesticides

TreePans reduce competing plant populations and increase moisture while maintaining airflow. In turn, this lessens the need for chemical intervention to maintain tree and soil health. Reducing chemical usage is good for both the environment and landscaping departments’ budgets.

Allow for tree growth

TreePans are the only expandable product of its kind. TreePans expand with the growth of the tree, the adjustable doors, can expand to fit any tree from 1” to 12”.

Increase drought tolerance

TreePans fortify trees during drought years. TreePans capture and direct all the available water to the root system while the dome design retains and slowly percolates this moisture. TreePans edging helps prevent valuable water from running off down hill, and effectively creates a greenhouse effect between the soil and the TreePan.

Prevent soil compaction

Trees need to breathe. Another hazard to trees from mowers and heavy equipment is soil compaction. TreePans provide a buffer zone around the base of trees so the water and oxygen can be effectively utilized by the root system.

Provide slow fertilization

Tree growers regularly report the best practice when fertilizing young trees is a slow application. TreePans are non-corrosive and tolerant to chemical fertilizers. Simply apply granular fertilizer to the top of the TreePan and allow rainwater to fertilize your trees. TreePans effectively creates a natural “time-release” option for applying important nutrients.
