Best Ways to Eliminate Weeds and Turf Grass

Water, water, water……

Water is leading the conversation when it comes to tree care and survivability.

More water = healthier trees = higher success rate…. right?

Heck, we talk about it a lot too!

However, what good is improved watering methods, if your tree is still competing for the added moisture? Weeds, grass, wood chips, and other plants will soak up water that is applied in & around the base of trees before it makes its way deep enough to be absorbed into the root system.

That is why suppressing weeds and turf grass around the base of your trees is such an important factor in tree survivability.

The picture below comes from Tree Services.

If everyone took the time necessary to care for their trees the way the individual above did, our trees would be doing great. As you can see there is a THIN layer of natural mulch acting as a shield and weed suppressor for the tree. Mulch has been pulled away from the base of the tree and extends out to cover the drip line. This is an example of the correct way to mulch your trees.

Because the care taker(s) of this tree took their time and due diligence to provide proper care, we can assume that this tree will be able to control weeds and turf grass and allow water to properly disseminate to the root system to adequately water the tree!

Wouldn’t it be great if there were products that did that for you?

There are many different ways to combat the competition. We would like to talk about a few different methods below and compare them to give you an accurate look at how you can better protect your tree and mitigate / eliminate any competition.

 WOOD CHIPS

Natural wood chips are the most common form of weed suppression. You can easily pick up bags of wood chips from your local hardware store, which will normally run you anywhere between $3-$10.00 / bag.

**What to watch out for:

Be careful when choosing your wood chips, many consumer bags of mulch you buy contain harmful chemicals / glues / or dyes. At the end of the day you shouldn’t be concerned with the color of your mulch, only that it does what its supposed to; stop the growth of grass, weeds, and cools your soil.

Look for non-treated fresh wood chips or hardwood bark when selecting your mulch. This will ensure there are no chemicals or dyes that will soak into your soil and root system.

ELBOW GREASE

One way that people take to controlling weeds is their God-given talents of hard work. Probably one of the best ways to rid your tree’s drip-line of weeds, is to do it the old fashioned way. Roll up your sleeves and get dirty! Happy hunting!

“EXTRA-EXTRA”

Some gardeners will turn to their Sunday newspaper for help and no, I’m not talking about the classified section. You can use newspaper as a biodegradable *mulch. Simply layer newspapers around the base of your tree, much like how you would disperse mulch then soak generously. In a couple of weeks the paper will break down into the soil. After the paper decomposes, you will have to maintain the area – bringing you back to square one.

CHEMICALS

Now don’t get all worked up, I’m not advising you go spray agent orange all over your lawn hoping to get your weeds under control, nor am I advising you grab name brand killers off the shelf. There are many non threatening home remedies you can use to battle the growth of weeds around your lawn, trees, and other plants.
